Obituary for Bettie Jane Shelner
Bettie Jane Shelner, age 70, passed away at her home in Sparta surrounded by her family on Friday, September 25, 2020. She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 21, 1950 to Robert and Irma (Randall) Lettau. Bettie was a devoted wife and mother. She only wanted to see her kids happy and find success. She made friends easily and had many friends throughout her lifetime. She traveled with her husband to every state, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii. She loved playing card games; especially cribbage, set-back, and poker with her friends and family. One of the joys Bettie had in life was making candy. She would make sure that family and friends had chocolate covered cherries and peanut butter cups for their birthday’s and on special holidays. She was an advocate for animals and cared deeply for their welfare. She had many cherished dogs and cats throughout her life. She even made sure that stray and wild animals around her home were well-fed. She loved feeding birds, and spent many hours watching them at the many feeders she set up. Bettie cared about everyone and everything in life.
Bettie is survived by her two sons, Earle II (Paula) Shelner and Chris Shelner (Jeff Wells); her grandchildren, Skylar and Gilmar Shelner; her sister Lois Lynn; her lifelong friends, Pam Hoezee and Marge Garske; and many other extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Irma; her husband Earle Shelner; her loving sister, Mary Radtke and brother, Gordy Saunders.
Family will meet visitors at Hessel-Cheslek Funeral Home in Sparta on Friday, October 2, 2020 from 11:00AM to 1:00PM where Covid 19 restrictions with social distancing and masks will be followed. The service for Bettie will be held graveside at 2:30PM at Oakwood Cemetery in Lowell with Reverend Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment to follow alongside her late husband, Earle. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Bettie’s memory to Humane Society of West Michigan at www.hswestmi.org or to a charity of one’s choice.
