Obituary for John Arthur Thorson
John Arthur Thorson age 78 passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Allendale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Allendale, MI after a courageous 6 year battle with Cancer. He was born on May 31, 1941 in Yankton, SD to Arthur and Marcella Thorson. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Kenyon, MN where he attended and graduated from High School in 1959. He then attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1963. That fall he entered Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa graduating with a Master of Theology Degree in 1967. During Summers in college and seminary he worked for the Glacier National Park System performing a variety of jobs. These summers provided some of his fondest memories. He was ordained into the Lutheran Ministry and accepted his first call in South Wayne, Wisconsin. He served several churches throughout his ministry in Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. He eventually retired in Sparta, MI in 2000 and lived there since. He was an avid reader and traveler, having traveled around the world twice. He was also a volunteer for refugee settlement through Lutheran Social Services and was actively involved in the Big Brother Organization. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth and Dean Hanson of Hudsonville, MI; several cousins. Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 27, 11:00 A.M. at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Bryan Schneider-Thomas and Rev. Paul Krupinski officiating. Friends may meet the family at the Church on Friday, 1 hour prior to the service. Inurnment of cremains will take place in Holden Lutheran Cemetery, Kenyon, MN. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Peace Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
