Obituary for Leonard Haskell Massey
Late Monday night, October 12, 2020, Leonard Haskell Massey fell asleep due to complications of the coronavirus, only to awake in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born and raised in Tennessee, he met his wife, Dorothy Louise Taylor, in upstate New York, and made his home in Michigan. Leonard worked various jobs throughout his life, including a greenhouse where he tended roses and a rubber factory where he permanently hurt his back.
His real passion was playing music, especially with others. Early in life, he played the country favorites of musicians like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams in bars and honky-tonks. In fact, Lenny (as many of his friends call him) looked and sounded so much like Hank Williams in his youth he was given the nickname "Hank".
But that changed when he gave his life to the Lord. He and Dorothy (on their second marriage together) formed a gospel group, The Old Time Gospel Singers, singing and ministering in retirement homes and churches. The two also lead worship in various area churches. "If we had a chance to go somewhere to sing, we'd go sing," says Dorothy.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 36 total years, Dorothy Louise Massey of Kent City, MI; his children, Scott Daniel Massey of Goose Creek, SC, Sharon Louise Vogler of Kent City, MI, Brian Lee Massey of Kent City, MI, Victoria Leigh Massey of Kent City, MI, and Matthew Wayne Massey of Cedar Springs, MI; his brother James Massey of Hastings, MI; his sister Bonnie Stinkney of Eastman, GA; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service held on Monday, October 19, 2020, at Leonard’s final resting place, Idlewild Cemetery in Kent City, at 1:00PM with Reverend Keith Bergquist officiating. Due to the Covid19 gathering restrictions, the family is also planning a Celebration of Life at a later date when larger gatherings can take place. Those wishing to make a donation in Leonard’s memory may do so to the family to help with the final expenses of hospitalization and Leonard’s unexpected passing.
"Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky."
"And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manners of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign forever and ever."
Revelation 22:1-5 KJV
