Obituary for Mary Johann Thomas
Mary Johann (Bonner) Thomas, age 89, passed away peacefully at Meadowlark Retirement Village in Sparta on Sunday, September 20, 2020 and is now with her Savior Jesus Christ. She was born in Whitehouse, Ohio on October 7, 1930 to Paul and Margarite (Stevens) Sherburne. Mary attended Howard City High School (now Tri-County) and she worked as a Sewing Machine Trainer at Gill/Cutler Manufacturing in Grand Rapids. After moving to Florida in 1979, with her husband, Mary was certified as a nurses aid and worked many years as a Nurse Aid.
January 21st 2019 Mary moved back to Michigan, after 40 years in Florida, to the Meadowlark Retirement Village. She was able to visit with the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren here in Michigan which brought her great joy. She also made many friends at Meadowlark Village including the residents and staff. Mary rekindled her love of music by singing with the talented piano players and music groups that were brought in by Meadowlark. The staff at Meadowlark village loved and cherished our Mom during the 21 months she was there. We will be eternally grateful for the staff and administration for their love, care and concern during our moms last days. We also thank Emmanuel Hospice for the great care and love they shared over the last 3 months.
Mary is survived by her children, Raymond (Genevieve) Thomas, Jr., Louise (Allen) King, Linda Dargie, Robert Thomas, Earl (Katie) Thomas, Rose (Bill) Neiss, Robert (Reba) Bonner, George (Jean) Bonner, Thomas (Gayla) Thomas and Joseph (Berlin)Thomas; her sister, Loretta Cook, sister-in-law, Jane Sherburne; 26 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 12 great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Margarite; her husband, Raymond Lee Thomas, Sr.; brothers, Paul, William and Martin Sherburne; sisters, Jessie Moulter and Margaret Guinn; and son-in-law, Robert Dargie, Sr.
Due to the gathering restrictions of Covid-19, family is planning a private service in Mary’s honor at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in Mary’s memory may do so to Emmanuel Hospice at www.emmanuelhospice.org.
