Obituary For Sue Ellen Carr
Sue Ellen Carr, age 73, passed peacefully into the embrace of her Lord on December 12, 2020, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was preceded in death by her parents Harlow and Dorothy Carr of Kent City, mother-in-law Lucy Smith, brother Richard Watkins, sisters Margaret (Dick) Cartwright and Marilyn (Richard) Blink. She is survived by her loving husband Larry Smith of Grand Rapids, sons Matthew (Laura) Smith and Adam (Evelyn) Smith, sister Linda (Ralph, decd.) Wiltse, sister-in-law Nancy (Thomas) Burke, grandchildren Alexander Lark, Jacob, Lucy, Molly and Mattie Smith, and many nieces and nephews.
Sue was born and raised in Kent City, and graduated from Kent City High School with Honors. She attended Ferris State University and Aquinas College, and received a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. She was a social worker for the DSS-FIA of the State of Michigan for 23 years, where she was known for her dedication and concern for her clients. After retirement she continued to volunteer in the community, showing special care for children.
Sue was a kind, loving, generous person, who never had a bad word to say about anyone. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always saw the good in people. She made friends easily. She benefited the lives of many people, and she will be missed by anyone who was blessed to know her.
Sue loved music, performing in the marching band in school, basking in Motown while in college and later going to frequent concerts and musicals. She also loved to travel. While working, she took many longs weekends to Las Vegas and New Orleans a few times each year. After retirement, she and Larry went on safari to Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. But her favorite trips were visiting her grandchildren in Idaho, or visiting friends in Gulf Shores. When not traveling, she and Larry enjoyed their cottage on Ben-Way lake in Antrim County.
